Smash-Mag!

Looking Back: First Issue

I have seen what some people have said about the first issue and it had a mixed review. Some people stated that there were too many grammar mistakes. That point was true but having several different people with very few ways of communication making a magazine is hard. We worked hard as a team but it wasn't quite enough. We had to finish earlier than Friday maybe a Wednesday. Many of the mistakes were made by me and I was working very hard passed the deadline time to get my articles finished. Other than the mistakes the mag was fine for the first issue and I would like to thank all of the writers who helped make last issue.

Hopefully all of the one who are reading this very thing have accepted that when things first start they are that great. We promise to make this one a whole lot better and to make it worthwhile.  Also I would like to announce that we have a spell checker and producer. He will be helping us out by keeping us on track and fixing some of our mistakes. His name is Silver Ace, and welcome him to the team. Now as many of you might of relized that a new head staff member was added, General Diddy. He is very excited about this and please congratulate him on his promotion.

                                                                            Heaven

When I saw the first trailer for Brawl, I was impressed by all of the newcomers and their graphics. But when I saw Pit, I though, “Who in the world is that?!” Now I’ve seen the light, and I can’t wait to play as Pit. His moves look great, and his graphical updates are very impressive (His most recent video game expedition was on the Game Boy). Here is my impression of the first newcomer on the DOJO!! Website.

Pit’s moves seem to be more of the careful type, unlike reckless characters like Sonic and Fox. He looks like he is based more around recovering than bashing entirely. Just look at his up-special. These are the Wings of Icarus. This will be incredible to use in recovering because of its length of use. I am glad to see that he has this, because in his original, he just fell!

I am anticipating his down-special, the mirror shield, because I loved to use Fox’s reflector in Melee. I’m hoping that you can do some sort of damage with it, apart from just reflecting attacks. It will help provide protection when your shield is near broken, but I will probably turn off the Franklin Badge when I play as him, so it doesn’t become useless.

His standard-special is the Palutena Arrow. It appears to be worth a lot more than Link’s bow because of its angle control, but I am sure that even fast-fingered Smash experts will need some experience with it.

His side special is apparently one of his best. He dashes forward while spinning his bow/sword wildly, cutting down all in his path. I will probably use this move the most; it does the most damage.

His Final Smash, Palutena’s Army, will be especially helpful when facing opponents who just… won’t… DIE!!! You call upon Palutena, who sends tiny centurions with big noses flying at every character to pummel them and destroy. The downside is that they have only one attack each, so you have to make sure that you help them bring down your enemies, unlike sitting and waiting for each character to die.

Overall, Pit appears to be one of the best characters in the game so far. He is quick and powerful, and I look forward to playing as him… and defeating you on wi-fi.

Melee Survival Guide

                                                  Ness

Hello, this is Hough123 here! This is the first edition of The Melee Survival guide! Here is where you can get tips that will help you pwn your friends! As the title states, this guide is for Ness! Let me tell you now that Ness was my first starter waaaaaay back in ’05! I switched to other characters, but I am now sticking with Ness!

Ness is light, and in a way slow, but he can kick some butt!  With Ness, you must balance your projectiles, and your physical attacks. I use PK Thunder, Ness’s ^B attack, a lot; it has made my friend start calling Ness “a two year old!” PK Thunder is used two ways; Recovery, and Projectile. To use it as a recovery, hit Ness with the electric ball part at the opposite angle that you wish him to go to. The best place to practice this is Hyrule Temple, go to the highest platform on the right and jump off. Speaking of jumping; Ness’s jump is very unique! It has a long animation, but this should not bother you. To use it as a projectile, just perform the attack, but instead of hitting yourself, hit the opponent. Practice this at Hyrule Temple as well.

Ness’s neutral B attack, PK Flash is hard to use, but it does massive damage! Wait for your opponent to fall asleep or be stunned, then use the attack. Just hold down the B button and move the control stick left or right. Practice this move at Final Destination OR Fountain of Dreams.

PK Fire, Ness’s >B attack, is a projectile with a great range. You can use it to escape a fight between two of your friends. It goes straight on land, and goes diagonally down in the air. Practice this attack at Final Destination OR Fountain of Dreams.

PK Magnet, Ness’s vB attack, turns any energy projectile into health! He can still take damage from physical attacks, though. Use this whenever someone uses an attack like PK Thunder. Practice this attack anywhere.

Some of Ness’s A attacks are weak, but you should still use them. His Smash A attack, the Baseball Bat, is his best A attack. His vB, The Sidekick, is his equivalent to Fox’s Blaster, but on a much smaller scale. His aerial attacks are great, but are hard to pull off. His aerial vB  is a meteor mash, his aerial backwards B is a nice finishing move, his aerial ^A sends the opponents flying, his aerial forward B is like his running A attack, and his neutral aerial A makes him spin to attack.

I hope that this will help you with Ness, I will not put strategies; those are for you to make.

Week in Review

If there was any word for the month of November it would be filler. The month lived nowhere up to the hype that brawl had during October. It went very slow and made the smash community blow smoke from their ears.  We were all frustrated but when the month was coming to a close it didn't go out with a whimper as we thought. It went out with a bang. The end wasn't filled with the best updates but better ones than most of the month.  Here I am with the second week in review which will be on the week of Nov. 26th. I hope you enjoy.

The week started off with the controller update.  Since the month was in a drought I wasn't thinking anything big would appear, and I was right.  With this update came the knowledge that you can customize your own controller scheme.  You can put the specials where shielding is and make put jumping on b. The possibilities are endless for what you can do. Another new feature with this would be to shake to smash.  Instead of tapping you can change to shaking the wii remote to pull of a smash attack.  This could be interesting.  The final thing that came from this update was that you could store your controller options onto your remote and play with you settings on others peoples' wiis.

On Tuesday we got a double update and it consisted of music and and a game mode.  The day wasn't the best for updates but these were solid ones for sure.  The music was Donkey Kong, a remake of the original tune. It was Catchy and good but it wasn't one of my favorites.  The peice was made by no other than Hirokazu Tanaka, who has been making music since the days of Game & Watch.  As for the game mode update, it was the wide screen option. Now you can play smash and get a more larger view of the action. No more of those bubbles that show you where you are off the screen.

This day we got what was one of the best updates of the month.  It was Wario's final smash showing that he turns into a supercharged version of himself. He'll eat a clove of garlic and then turns into warioman. All of his moves are more powerful. He doesn't unleash a super strong attack but he has a little bit of time to be a stronger version of himself.  One thing that was advised to us was not to use the bike, wario's side special.  It will be way to fast, but there will be the very daring to do such a thing. I am up to the dare are you?

Now that we knew that the week had at lease one good update we were waiting for yet another.  luckily, it came the day after.  It was event mode, the one that came from melee.  In the update we were given what a few of the event were about.  There is Two Trouble Kings, where Mario tries to fight off both bowser and King Dedede. Another was Dark Link Duel where link faces off against his dark counterpart on Eldon Bridge. The last one that I will share is Sleeping in Eggs in which Yoshi will try to lay both Pickachu and Kirby in egss simultaneously. the others you might need to check out the official site to see what they are.

To end the week off in a good note, we got the past Melee stages. Though only one was shown there will be more are to come. The stage that was given to us was the Temple stage.  This stage was a favorite of mine and makes me so happy to see it come back. I just can't wait to see some of the new characters play on this stage.  Something else came with it too, the music to go with it but changed a little.  This was a perfect update to redeem the month, but was it truly enough.

The Music Flows in You: Part 1

We have had a few music updates over the course of the Smash Website. I will go into detail and review some of these songs.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl Main Theme

This song is the very heart of the latest Smash game. We first heard it during the first trailer for Brawl. I can't really make out what they are singing even if it is in English. It still gives that feeling that you are truly in an epic game.

I give this music a 3 1/2 out of 5.

Yoshi's Story: Ending

This song first appeared in Yoshi's Story as the ending song(go figure) Sakurai finds this song very emotional. He even went so far as to add Yoshi's voice in the song. I have never played the original Yoshi's Story but the people who have should enjoy this arrangement!

I give this music a 2 1/2 out of 5.

Metroid Boss Battle Music(Ridley Fight)

This is Ridley's theme song. It has appeared in many Metroid games and is often the tune that plays during big battles. Ridley's Music may be in the game but the giant dragon hasn't shown his face yet. It is true is the most wanted 1st party character in Brawl. Let us keep our fingers crossed!

I give this music a 2 out of 5.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Medley

This is one of my favorite songs revealed in Brawl so far. Zelda games have always had wonderful music. It is truly awesome that many of the best songs in the Zelda series are mixed into one beautiful song. This song has many roots drawn from many games but you can guess that it contains songs from Ocarina of Time. Like a Fruit Medley, The Ocarina of Time Medly is as mixed and equally sweet.

I give this music a 5 out of 5.

I hope everyone enjoyed this article and look forward to seeing the coming arts of The Music Flows in you!

Grab Combos Part A

This is just a little article i thought i'd write to help improve people's skill, mainly the newbies or people that just aren't naturals at smash. I will include a simple grab combo for every character in melee in this 2 part article. The first part will have the first 13 characters on the character select, the next will have the second 12 + Shiek. Again, if you wavedash and SHFFL and all that, this isn't for you. If you got melee a few months ago or honestly just having trouble getting the hand of smash, then this is indeed for you.

-Dr. Mario, Mario, and Luigi: Use the down grab move, then use your down+b, that spin tornado (or whatever it's called). Off of this, depending on how much damage they have with the combination of how far the went, you could attempt a up or down smash attack.

-Bowser: Now this one is a little bit harder. You use the up grab move, lobbing them in the air. Then, you jump in the air, short-hopping if you can, and then forward smashing them.

-Peach: Use your down grab move, then use her most powerful smash, her down smash.

-Yoshi: i'm unsure how well this one will work. I'm terrible with Yoshi, and really couldn't find a good one. Anyway. use your up grab move then use an up smash attack.

-DK: This really isn't a combo, but his forward grab move picks up your opponent. This can be used as a jump of the edge kamikazee, but only use it if your have more stock, in case you mess up or they somehow make it back up. But, on stages that are not platforms, just a big landmass, pick em up and run off the side. They'll die first, and you'll be able to run back alive.

-Captain Falcon: Use his forward grab move, then use his side B(side special). This will lightly lob him in the air, giving you a good up special opportunity (Up+B)

-Ganondorf: Considering his Up+B (up special) is very strong, just throw them up and then use your up special (Up+B)

-Falco: In this one, and in fox's, you will use a "shine" technique. All it is is using your reflector (Down+B) when touched you opponent to deal damage and Push them away. On Falco's shine, the go up in the air. This is very crucial for this combo. Anyway, you use his down grab move, shine them, then jump and up smash 'em.

-Fox: Again, down grab move and shine them. But fox's shine sends them to the side. So either start spamming your laser, or if you think they're gonna charge at you, just side smash 'em.

-Ness: With Ness, you will use your up grab move. Then either try PK Thunder (Up+B) or PK Frost (Neutral B). I recommend only trying PK Frost when your opponent is at at least 75 or so damage.

-Ice Climbers: Use your Down grab move, then side smash them.

If you liked this one, remember to see the other 13 characters' grab combos in the next issue.

Widescreen, Handicap, and.... Meta Knight's Special moves... again?..... oh my...-Peteypiranha128

November. What a month. We received some of the worst updates ever according to some. For example, Sakurai gave us "Meta Knight: Special Moves", but we already got this earlier. His excuse was: "But, since he has so many peculiar moves, I wanted to explain them again." Ok Sakurai. Thats just dandy, but where is the new stuff?
Sakurai hasn't given us a veteran since September 14th.... thats almost 2 months ago. Not only was there no veteran last month, but November was absent of a character ALL TOGETHER! I don't know what sakurai was doing by not giving us a single character all month, but he's gotta give us at least one veteran a month.
Also, he supplied us with very useless, obvious updates. Handicap for example. Obviously, handicap was going to be a feature of Brawl. It is such a lame, and boring feature, and it could have gone without being updated.
When I read the wide screen update, he made me feel like a moron. Honestly, he said things like "wide screen doesn't affect the size of the stage, it just affects how it looks. WE KNOW HOW WIDESCREEN WORKS. Almost all games today have wide screen support, so what would make us think Brawl was different.
In conclusion, this month was terrible. We received almost nothing new, and it was full of  bad updates. Well, February 10th is coming, and until then, we will keep you up to date.

See you around!-Peteypiranha128

Happy Holidays!-Peteypiranha128

Well, its almost Christmas time! I just wanted to make an article saying: Merry Christmas everyone! Or, to be more correct, Happy Holidays! Its a shame smash wasn't out on the third, but we still have the wonderful holiday season to cheer us up ^_^.   Holidays are wonderful... even for Bowser, so I decided to include a cool holiday background! ( I didn't make this!)
